Leadership Philosophy

My leadership philosophy is a work in progress and is continually updated. Please find the most recent updates below.

My personal leadership philosophy revolves around the concept of evolving and always chasing improvement. Successful leaders understand the importance of being a team player while leading the team. Thus, effective leadership begins with enthusiasm aimed at creating positive impacts. To do this, I aim to be empathetic and open-minded to others. This includes being able to adapt to different situations that arise and take on a leadership style that is most appropriate. Key to this is open communication so that all team members understand what is expected. Notably, this involves setting mutually agreed upon realistic goals and expectations. This is important because as a leader, I want to be approachable yet respected.

One of my goals as a leader is to not only fulfill my own potential, but to also help others find and fulfill their own potential. This is achieved by leading with strength rather than fear. To foster this environment, a diligent work ethic and honesty are valued while indolence and unreliability are not tolerated. I have learned that key to this is one's approach and perspective entering any type of situation. This includes maintaining a calm, appropriate demeanor in all situations and remaining proactive as a leader. Accordingly, this requires the successful leader to be emotionally intelligent, neutral, and level-headed.

How my MA in Ethics and Society will help me as nurse leader?

Rooted in the Jesuit tradition of intellectual excellence, this program allowed me to gain a foundation in the moral frameworks of philosophy, theology, psychology, bioethics, and social justice with the commitment to create a caring and just world. This program allowed me the unique opportunity to observe professionals whose work requires advanced ethical-decision making. Complimentary to this didactic courses continually challenged me to understand different perspectives, fostering unique critical thinking skills. Particularly with its emphasis on human behavior, this program prepared me to critically engage with, analyze, and offer solutions for diverse problems.

Through this program, I not only developed and fostered indispensable skills but a passion for helping others and the organizations I am loyal to for striving for excellence. As a nurse leader, I will employ these concepts and principles gained during this program to best motivate and build up those around me and achieve larger goals.

Earning my MSN in Nursing Healthcare Organizational Leadership

This program is further fostering the necessary skills to help drive continuous improvement in health outcomes and patient-centered care as vital to any nursing administrator and leader. Specifically, this program is aiding me in my preparation to meet numerous distinct responsibilities health care leaders are accountable for including: higher-level business management, ensuring compliancy with current laws and regulations, implementing best practices, managing information systems, strategizing new initiatives, overseeing Human Resources, facilitating communications, and nurturing relationships at various levels.

Many of these principles and skills are complementary to my previous educational coursework. This allows me to bring a unique perspective to furthering my nursing educational experience.

Ready for Growth

Despite my relatively brief tenure in clinical nursing, I have demonstrated a commitment to excellence and passion for not only nursing but nurse leadership. Additionally, I offer relevant work and educational experiences that contribute to me as an ideal, qualified candidate, aligning perfectly with the responsibilities for this position; Nursing administration requires a distinct skill set from clinical, bedside nursing. I am not only confident in my abilities to learn and master new information and situations quickly, but that the skill set developed thus far is tailored to organizational leadership positions such as this one. As anyone could understand and observe from working with me, I am eager to learn and be a resource, always lending a hand when possible.

Continually growing within my current unit, I am ready to take on this leadership role in particular. As illustrated by quickly becoming involved in the Unit Practice Committee and the RN Satisfaction Action Planning Committee for the Magnet journey, I am committed to the unit's success and passionate about supporting the larger goals and mission of the organization. As an assistant manager I envision leveraging my strengths to foster a positive work environment. Key to this is my belief that approach in everything is crucial. This belief has prepared me to have the crucial and difficult conversations that come along with this position as well as celebrate achievements and strength in the unit. I am confident that my proactive approach and neutral demeanor will help us achieve quality care, exceed expectations, and help unite our unit. I am eager to bring my energy, ideas, and collaborative spirit to this role.
